In 1853, English hymnwriter John Mason Neale wrote the "Wenceslas" lyric, in collaboration with his music editor Thomas Helmore, and the carol first appeared in Carols for Christmas-Tide, published by Novello & Co the same year. The name Wenceslas is a Latinised version of Old Czech " Venceslav". The legend is based on the life of the historical Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (907–935). During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow.
